Ben has lived in the Black Hills for most of his life. He attended Custer High School and South Dakota School of Mines before being drafted into the U.S. Army, serving one year in Vietnam and returning to serve the remainder in of his obligation to law enforcement in Tacoma, Washington. He was then hired as a Fire Control Technician at Mount Rushmore National Monument before being sworn in as a Deputy U.S. Marshal with the Department of Justice in April of 1972. As a Deputy U.S. Marshal, Ben served with the U.S. Marshals Special Operations Group (Tactical Operations) for 14 years and retired in May of 1998.
The Attorney General for the State of Oregon hired Ben as a Criminal Intelligence Coordinator (Western States Information Network) until February of 2003, when he returned to South Dakota to be near his Father. Since that time, he worked at The Tomahawk Country Club in Deadwood, The Gold Dust Casino (Security) and later tested for his Real Estate License in both South Dakota and Wyoming, and has been involved in Real Estate ever since.
Ben is currently President of the Lions Club, has been President of the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, a member of the Oregon Narcotics Enforcement Association, a speaker at numerous events (schools and civic organizations), and a member of both the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans.
Ben and his wife Karen reside in the hills of Spearfish, along with their golden retriever “Mandy” and cat “Pearl”. They love taking long drives in the Black Hills and camping in their travel trailer, creating the perfect opportunities for Karen to build up her photography portfolio. www.KJMahoney.com
